![]() I think there is also something to be said about BilBo’s (who also showed extraordinary resistance in resisting the evilness of the ring for about a century) nephew being the one who fated for the task. Nobody else could bear the responsibility or weight of being ring bearer (resisting the power of the ring for long stretches) which is why they (including Sam) didn’t volunteer for the job. This journey called to something deep within him, a call that only he could hear and thus answer. Frodo chose this task because it was ultimately meant for him to bear. I think we can very clearly say that precisely because he didn’t. He is my favourite character (along with Sam!) Frodo is a hero and he deserves so much respect. He offered himself as a martyr for a cause he had no pledge in. Frodo symbolises pure hope in humanity and in the human spirit. Which are fundamental necessities of life. I respect him so much because his role is not the one of ‘action’ but one of perseverance, restraint, and endurance. I find myself crying at his scenes and feeling so seen by him. As a kid I used to dislike Frodo because ‘he does nothing but fall and have Sam save him!’ But as I grew older and rewatched it every year (as you must!) I found myself sympathising the most with Frodo. This is (one of my) interpretations of LOTR. The moral of the story is that each part must be accepted and integrated in order for us to be whole people, now strong enough to break the chain. Each character in LOTR symbolises something a part of ourselves. If Frodo is ‘the essence’ of a person, which is the pure and original nature of someone’s soul, and Gollum is ‘the shadow,’ which is the twisted distortion of the parts we disown about ourselves - then of course it is essential for both parts of a persons psyche to come together to defeat the cycle of suffering (the ring). Of course he failed - because it is not one person’s journey. This is also why I think it is essential that Frodo failed at the end. People must rally, and even the smallest action or person can make the greatest difference. This is because it’s proving that it is never one person who can defeat the forces of evil, but the collective spirit. are all heroes in their own right who played their part in the war of the ring. Sam, Aragorn, Gandalf, Theoden, Faramir, Eowyn, Merry/Pippin etc. Frodo would not have survived without Sam, and Sam could not have done Frodo’s job. Wherever Frodo Baggins goes, Samwise Gamgee goes also. It is clear they are represented as one soul. And you cannot compare Frodo and Sam in my opinion. Every person has their part to play, even the ‘dark side.’ For example, if it weren’t for Gollum (and those who spared him) the whole world would be lost. I also don’t think there is one hero of the LOTR. Frodo’s journey is the ultimate self-sacrifice and the ultimate bravery. And he is a hobbit who had no duty towards it, but someone who volunteered. ![]() He is carrying the weight of all sin on his chest. He is basically Christ carrying the cross on the Via Dolorosa. Frodo gets a lot of disrespect for some reason.
